Nissan Recalls 1 million Cars

USA Today recently reported that “Nissan is recalling 1 million vehicles because the air bag system software might not be able to tell whether there is a person sitting in the front passenger seat, so the air bag might not inflate in a crash.”

Nissan admitted in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration they received three reports of air bags failing to inflate in a crash.

The USA Today article noted that the “recent action involves what’s called the occupant classification system, which judges whether anyone is sitting in the passenger’s seat in order to decide whether to inflate the bag if there is a crash.”

It was noted that the airbag system may not deploy when there is a “high engine vibration at idle when the seat is initially empty and then becomes occupied, or unusual occupant seating postures immediately upon being seated.” Accidents occur and it is critical that the safety systems in place are working to protect the occupants inside if there is a car accident. Recalls occur for many reasons: some for defects that are minor and some for defects that are serious and deadly in nature. Companies will fix the recall defect free of charge in most if not all cases.
