Progressive Insurance Claims and Settlements: A Car Accident Lawyer’s Perspective
Author: Joshua Brabant
The Progressive Corporation, known as the Progressive Casualty Insurance Company through its subsidiaries, provides personal automobile insurance, and other specialty property-casualty insurance and related services in the United States. Jack Green and Joe Lewis co-founded the company in 1937 which is headquartered in Mayfield Village, Ohio. Progressive Insurance insures about 12 million cars and trucks in the United States and is one of the companies to have used the Internet as a means of decreasing the costs of selling insurance through an insurance agency. They have a great deal of TV advertising that depicts an insurance superstore with an overly enthusiastic cashier named Flo, who explains the benefits of Progressive Insurance.
In Massachusetts, Progressive has good adjusters that respond in a timely manner to our accident lawyers. But Progressive’s settlement offers in auto accident cases in Massachusetts appear to be below what the clients expect from the average car insurance company in an accident case. In most Massachusetts accident claims against Progressive, we are required to file a lawsuit as a means to achieve a fair settlement for the client.
The settlement amount usually increases to a fair amount after a lawsuit has been filed which is handled by its in-house counsel, the Law Office of Paul G. Pino, based in West Warwick Rhode Island.
As an aside, it has come to our auto accident attorneys’ attention here that, because many Progressive insured’s are purchasing their insurance online without the aid of an agent, many of them are opting for what is called a PIP Deductible. This will be talked about in a later post but suffice it to say, this only saves the insured a little money in their premium, but if they get into an accident they will have lost out on the $8000 dollars in PIP/No Fault insurance, which can have an overall negative affect on the case settlement.
